It is with deep regret that we must inform you that our leading colleague Prof. Teruo Watanabe died in an accident during geological survey on 9th May 2002. He was 58 years old. Because he was a leading scientist who had accomplished a great deal in the study of the Precambrian in Asia, we propose to add an additional phrase to this Symposium, and designate it as a "Memorial Symposium for Prof. Teruo Watanabe".

The second circular of the PPO Asia International Symposium "Amalgamation of Precambrian blocks and the role of the Paleozoic orogens in Asia", to be held under the aegis of IGCP Projects 411,420,440, contains information additional to the 1st circular sent in March 2002. We received a good response to the 1st circular. 2001 Osaka ISRGA  offered recent data on the growth of Asia continent. We beleive further signifcant discussions following to the OSAKA ISRGA results will be made at PPO-Asia. We presently realize that the results have deciphered much complicated accretion-subduction and collision processes of the Paleozoic orogens in the formation of proto-Asian continent. We are confident that the symposium will produce fruitful results and contribute much to geoscience.

The Symposium will be held between 5th and 7th September in the Conference Hall of the Graduate School of Science, Hokkaido University, Sapporo City. Sapporo is about 50 km from Sapporo (Shin-Chitose) International Airport (SPK), and the conference venue is 300 m from the nearest subway station (Kita-12jou). The weather in Sapporo in September is pleasant, but a little cool. Although the mean temperature is 17.2°C, additional light winter clothing is advisable for both Sapporo and the field.
